In genealogy and family trees, how do you typically display maiden names? née, parentheses, hyphenation?
Wednesday, October 29th, 2008I’ve seen it done with “née”, parentheses, and with hyphenation. What’s the most common way?
For example, if Jane Doe’s maiden name was Smith, it might be displayed as:
Jane Doe, née Smith
Jane Doe née Smith
Jane Doe (Smith)
Jane Smith-Doe
Perhaps there are other ways too, with which I’m not familiar.
What is the most commonly accepted way to display the maiden name in genealogical research and in family trees and listings?

Family genealogy disclosure contract?
Wednesday, October 15th, 2008We’re having a reunion for my maternal grandmother’s mother’s family (mom’s, mom’s mom’s family) .
I’d like to set up a genealogy table because I need dates and stories before the storytellers of the family are gone.
Most genealogy sites online either warn, or won’t post current info on living family members.
I’d like to put this online to share with others; or maybe publish it as a booklet for the family once I get the info together.
I was thinking of a simple form saying something to the effect of “Smith-Jones Family Reunion”.
Names/addresses, birth, death, burial, stories, etc.
A check box if you’re filling it out for someone else, living/dead.
What legalese do I need to use to get their permission to publish? And does this need to be notarized? I have a great-aunt who’s a notary.
Thanks!
What genealogy software do you use?
Friday, October 10th, 2008And what are its good points compared to the other programs? And, if you’re not using software, how do you keep it all organized?
If you’re a veteran from the old days, what’s missing in computer software that you’d like to see?
Best sound-off, genealogical smack, or ranting rave wins 10 points.
PS: I have yet to meet an experienced genealogist who has less opinions than the number of people on their family tree…go ahead and rant…
Dawes Roll and Native American Genealogy?
Thursday, October 9th, 2008I have located a name on the Dawes Roll that may, (or may not) be my husband’s grandfather or great-grandfather. (Correct name, correct area, Stilwell OK) With the information on the Roll is there a way I can trace it forward? To find out the children of the person listed? What would be the next step to fill in the gaps between my husband’s mother and her grand-parents? (requests from family for info has not been helpful. Most are deceased)
Thanks for any help!
