Where to start with Lithuanian genealogy?

Does anyone know a good way to start researching one’s Lithuanian heritage? I’ve done a little bit of looking on Ellis Island’s website to see ship logs, but I want to trace further back than my great-grandfather (which requires finding Lithuanian documents) and also to find more records here in the U.S. pertaining to my great-grandfather. Help is appreciated. I’m hoping for something online – I hear Ancestry.com just spams the crap out of you, though.
